Hit And Run Christians

I have grown a lot since high school, my views on a lot of things have changed. One of them being witnessing. I know I have been talking an awful lot about that here, but I really think it’s important. As I said before, we as Christians hold the key to salvation in our hands, and it would be cruel not to share it with everyone. But the problem still remains, how in the heck do we do share? How do we let others know about the love of Christ without scaring them away? I mean, I know how not to do it, but I am still learning the correct way… if there is a correct way.
I think a lot of us have become “hit and run” Christians. We drive through life and when we bump into someone, we might say something like “Jesus loves you” or if we are extra generous we’ll hand them a tract. But after that we will drive off never to see or speak to them ever again. You may have planted a seed there, which is great, but what do they do with it now? How do they know how to water it and feed it? How will they now learn to be the disciples God called them to be? We leave them with nothing, absolutely nothing.
We have to give these people something more, something they can hang onto. We need to give them ourselves. We have to be real with them, not some bible thumping crazed Christian the media loves to throw all over the TV. Be real. Be the opposite of a Christian. Jesus did some rather crazy things in his day things that would rub a lot of Christians nowadays the wrong way. He drank alcohol, hung out with thieves and prostitutes. As Shane Claiborne points out in his book, he made booze just to keep a party going. He was a “hit and run” kind of guy, he stayed to make sure everything was ok. He didn’t just run through the streets yelling “I love you!!!!” He showed them he loves them. He showed them he loved them by becoming one of them, one of us. He came down to our level. He put every one before himself, he washed his disciples feet. He came to serve. What is a better way for us to show Gods love than to do it the way he did?
I know it sometimes feels like I am beating a dead horse hear but I think it’s important. I am interested now in what you think. What are ways you think we can show Gods love? Some practical ways, in which people may see Jesus through us.
