Top 10 Movie List
05/15/08
Another meme another day. There are some memes I see that I just pray that the author temporarily forgets I exist and then there are some that I just can’t wait to get my hands on. This is one that I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on. I was tagged by Shawn, over at Lo-Fi Tribe, to create a top ten movie list, and boy do I love movies. Here are the rules (as copied and pasted directly from Shawn himself):
1. List your top ten favorite films (in no particular order). 2. If you are tagged, you have to post and tag 3-5 people. 3. Link back to the one who tagged you.
So here we go in no particular order my top ten movie list!
This Is Spinal Tap
Does for rock and roll what “The Sound of Music” did for hills. With such classic songs as “Hell Hole”, “Sex Farm”, and “Big Bottom” how could you go wrong? As a huge heavy metal fan I have to say this just might be my favorite movie of all time. I am a huge sucker for loud music and dumb humor, which this movie has plenty of. This film stars Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer, who play their parts well. It is mock “rockumentary” about a washed up British heavy metal band trying to make a come back here in the states, followed by by a fan and film maker Marti DeBergi (Rob Reiner) Some of the highlights include a two part harmony of “Heart Break Hotel” at Elvis’ grave, Harry Shearer getting stuck inside a giant pea pod of sorts, and exploding drummers. Warning: This is in no way a family film.
About A Boy
Growing up has nothing to do with age. Staring Hugh Grant, this film… wow how do I even explain this one? This film just really hit me I don’t know why, but if you have seen it you probably know what I mean. It is a very cleverly written comedy-drama that really draws you into all the characters lives, feeling for each one. If you haven’t seen it go and get it you won’t be sorry.
I find the key is to think of a day as units of time, each unit consisting of no more than thirty minutes. Full hours can be a little bit intimidating and most activities take about half an hour. Taking a bath: one unit, watching countdown: one unit, web-based research: two units, exercising: three units, having my hair carefully disheveled: four units. It’s amazing how the day fills up, and I often wonder, to be absolutely honest, if I’d ever have time for a job; how do people cram them in? -Hugh Grant
The Departed
Lies. Betrayal. Sacrifice. How far will you take it? Oh man, I love this movie. This has a great story, great cast, and great soundtrack. Everything about this movie kicked my butt, almost literally. Jack Nicholson plays an Irish mob boss who is one bad dude, and the Massachusetts State Police Department wants to take him down so they send in an undercover cop to infiltrate the gang, little do they know they Nicholson had the same idea, and has one of his guys on the force as well. With twists and surprises I give this movie two thumbs up.
Terminator 2
It’s nothing personal. Come on, you know you love this movie, who doesn’t? This is Arnold at his best, unless you count Kindergarten Cop. Arnold plays the lovable cyborg from the future who travels back in time to protect John Conner (Edward Furlong) who one day will grow up to lead the humans in the war against the robots. Great movie to add to any library.
John Connor: We’re not gonna make it, are we? People, I mean.
The Terminator: It’s in your nature to destroy yourselves.
John Connor: Yeah. Major drag, huh?
Juno
A comedy about growing up… and the bumps along the way. How could I write a post about how great this movie is and not include it? Well if you want to hear my reason for this one go read my post.
The Sixth Sense
Not every gift is a blessing. This is the movie that turned me onto M. Night Shyamalan, a great writer and director. Now, if there is anyone out there who has not seen this movie I will not spoil it. I will give the basics. Bruce Willis is a child psychologist who tries to cure a child with a very unusual problem…
Iron Man
I just saw this movie and there is not enough good things I can say about it. I loved X-Men and this blew that out of the water. No super powers just a genius with a lot of money and an iron suit. When a military weapon (Robert Downey Jr.) creator finds out that his right hand man (Jeff Bridges) is selling their weapons to terrorists, he decides to take matters into his own hands. For a comic book movie this has great actors and one seriously awesome plot line.
Braveheart
The courage to face fear. This should be self explanatory but I will go on. This movie just makes you want to start a revolution about just about anything, just so you can give a kick butt speech. Mel Gibson portrays a legendary Scot, William Wallace, who gained recognition when he came to the forefront of the First War of Scottish Independence by opposing Edward I of England (thank you Wikipedia!). Seriously though, this is a great film with one heck of a soundtrack… yeas I love soundtracks.
Tombstone
Justice Is Coming. My favorite western of all times right here folks. Some of my favorite quotes come form this movie:
Billy Clanton: Why, it’s the drunk piano player. You’re so drunk, you can’t hit nothin’. In fact, you’re probably seeing double.
[Billy Clanton draws a knife]
Doc Holliday: [takes out a second gun] I have two guns, one for each of ya.
This is the only movie in which I think Val Kilmer does a great job. This movie just makes you wish you were a cowboy… except for the whole OK Corral part… I could do without that.
The Matrix
In a world of 1s and 0s…are you a zero, or The One? The roll Keanu Reeves was meant to play, a confused gun toting computer hacker. I saw this one in the theater and let me tell you when I came out I too thought I knew kung fu. The sequels were nothing compared to this one. The Matrix was revolutionary as far as special effects go, I remember as soon as this movie came out every action movie that followed tried to copy the talent of this movie. Plus it had yet another must own soundtrack.
I’m tagging, Mike Wilson, Jesse J. Anderson, and Phil Bowell.
